Below are some helpful tips to get you started in the right direction

Graphics
Poor quality graphics are a common indicator of unprofessional web design work. If graphics are unprofessional in appearance, the site will be, too. So, if you lack the desire or time, the best bet is to use professional photos or images. Free images can be used on non-commercial sites but usually require a copyright notice and link back to the owner. High quality professional images can be purchased.

Keep It Simple
You may have heard of the K.I.S.S. principle -- Keep It Simple, Stupid (or, Silly). These are words to design by. It's far easier to create an attractive simple design than a complex one, so take a close look at all of the elements on your page. Then, simplify.

Limit Fonts
The fewer, the better. We would recommend using just one font and adding bold for headings. However, one font for text and another for headings is usually acceptable, also. Be sure to use fonts that are common on both Mac and PC computers.

Limit Colors
Three is the standard. A primary, a less-used secondary, and a little-used third color for accent.

Limit Lines of Text
Text that runs the full width of the browser window can be hard to read. Limit the width of lines of text to no more than 400-500 pixels.

Be Consistent
Resist any temptation to use a new layout or color scheme on each page of your site. Use the same fonts and colors throughout your site. Use the same navigation throughout your site and place it in the same position on every page.

Pay Attention to Layout
  • Balance
Objects carry weight. Some, depending on color, size, shade, and shape, can appear to be heavier than other objects. It's easier to see balance in grayscale. Try removing the color from all images on your page, then checking it for balance.
  • Eye Direction
Shapes and images that point away from content or off of the page can be distracting. Pay attention to whether the images on your web page are directing the eye to or away from important content.
  • Finishing Touches
Adding small details, such as fine shadows or lines, can add polish to the site's design.
Test
  • Browser Test
Test your pages on as many browsers as possible. At a minimum, take a look at your site in Internet Exproler and Firefox.
    Platform Test
You would want to know how your pages look on Windows and Mac machines and on as many browsers as possible on each. If you don't have both of these platforms available, ask for a site review on the Web Design Forums -- there is a special section just for that purpose.
  • Spell Check - mandatory before you put the site live
